Abstract translation

Who will be interested in this type of translation?

Abstract translation is ordered, as a rule, for the translation of scientific articles, educational materials, news materials in the format of articles, video and audio. An abstract translation is a translation which involves the compression of the source material using transduction. This is a linguistic transformation of the text, which involves transcoding the text of the source document and creates an abridged version of the text using another language.

As a result, the information of the finished translated text by value should coincide with the original, but be much smaller in volume. An abstract translation needs more time than usual, although in the end a shortened version of the source text is obtained.

The main stages of such a translation is:

  1. Highlight key information
  2. Paraphrasing the main fragments
  3. Generalization of parts that carry a semantic load
  4. Transduction of semantic parts into the language of translation
  5. Structured presentation of the received text

Abstract translation is a type of full written translation of previously prepared and certain parts of the text which together constitute an abstract of the original. The length of such a translation is much shorter and all related information is not translated. In our Translation Agency use this type of translation for work on special texts in which you need quickly and clearly translate the essence, without supporting information. With this type of translation, the translator “compresses” the main content of the text by means of another language to which the translation is performed.

Abstracts can be of several types:

  • Abstract-note and abstract-summary – such division occurs according to the nature of the starting material. Abstract-note includes the main thematic aspects of the original in a generalized version. Abstract-summary has a minimum length and requires much more generalization of information than an abstract-note.
  • Abstracts can be found both written and oral, depending on the design and perception.
  • Also abstracts are divided by the coverage of sources into multigraphic, consolidated, selective and overview. A multigraphic abstract consists of material taken from one source, consolidated consists of material that is selected from several sources. The name of the multigraphic abstract is usually determined by the material itself, which it covers. An overview abstract is based on a specific topic or direction and is a brief overview of the selected material. It serves as an informative tool on the selected issue. Selective abstract is compiled on the basis of the selected chapters, sections or materials.

Certain requirements are imposed on abstracts:

  1. The language used in writing the essay should be literary and concise. The beginning of the abstract should not consist of general phrases, all necessary information should reflect the essence of the topic. When writing an abstract don’t use abstract phrases and statements abstracted from the topic. Inaccurate wording and obscure words in expressions are not allowed. Better to avoid complex sentences. Introductory phrases are allowed in oral abstract.
  2. When using digital data in the abstract, it must be submitted in metric form. It is allowed to present some designations from the original material in brackets behind the translated expression.
  3. If in the translation of the abstract little-known surnames or names are used, they should be indicated in brackets in the original language.
  4. If during the translation of the abstract there are frequent repetitions of names or terms, then they can be indicated in an abridged version. After the first mention of the word, which will be repeated in the future, in parentheses they put a capital letter or a few letters, which are subsequently indicated without parentheses. If the material contains not accepted, in the domestic scientific and technical literature, it should be replaced by accepted.
  5. After completion of work, the referent indicates the initials and date.

The structure of the abstract is always different and does not have coincidences in different forms, it depends on the nature of the material used. For bibliographic abstract, you can use the following structure:

  • bibliographic description;
  • leading idea;
  • statement of content;
  • reviewer’s commentary.

For abstracts multigraphic and consolidated, which relate to military and legal topics, you can use this structure:

For abstracts multigraphic and consolidated, which relate to military and legal topics, you can use this structure:

  • description of the source and topic of work;
  • the main idea;
  • presentation of material;
  • expert findings;
  • reviewer’s commentary.

When describing the source and topic, if necessary, it can be left in the original language. If the abstract is educational or consolidated, a description of the primary source can be omitted, and just at the end indicate “bibliography”. In some cases, the main idea answers the question of a given topic. The topic is not clearly presented in the original material then the duties of the referent include its clear wording and presentation in the correct and accessible form. Presentation of the material is the main goal of any abstract. The essence of the abstract is mainly in the presentation of the material. The findings include information that the author provides, revealing the main topic. It should be noted that the number of conclusions can be unlimited, and they are not always at the end. Sometimes there are abstracts in which conclusions are at the very beginning or middle of the material. The commentary of the referent can be presented with information about the history of the issue, various clarifications and explanations, etc.

It should be clearly understood that an abstract can never be replaced by a translation. It is necessary to resort to translation if there are generalizations that are presented in the original or when it is necessary to quote some material.
