Technical translation is one of the main types of translation with which our company has been working for more than 10 years.

Technical translation differs from other types of translation in that it is saturated with technical terminology, drawings, graphs, diagrams. In many cases, the technical direction documents come into operation in the Word, PDF, Jpeg, Png formats. More complex and extensive technical texts are made in AutoCad, Compas, Visio and other various programs.

This kind of translation is difficult not only because of its terminology, but also because of the complexity of the formatting. As a rule, for technical translation we involve specialists of different levels and specializations. All our translators of this subject have higher technical education, and minimal experience in working with technical translations from 7 years and above.

The editorial staff also has a technical secondary education and more than 10 years of experience. The make-up artists of our company make technical documents of any complexity and format.

Let’s analyze all the features of technical translation:

Technical terminology in translation

Technical translation is highly specialized, as the texts consist of 75% of technical terms. There are times when the terms, most commonly used, are generally accepted in the client’s company, so we ask to provide a glossary. It helps technical translators to apply the necessary terminology and speeds up work on the text. It helps technical translators to apply the necessary terminology and speeds up the work on the text.

Working with drawings and diagrams

Drawings and diagrams in the translation of technical documents – this is a common phenomenon.

As a rule, there is a bit text in the drawings and diagrams. Basically, these are short inscriptions, measuring magnitudes, names.

When we working with drawings in the AutoCad program, we involve layout designers. To correctly calculate the volume of the translated text, at first we transform the file into a PDF format, and then into a Word format. This allows us to accurately determine the volume of text by symbols and correctly distribute the work between the translator, the editor and the layout designer.

The process of technical translation

A technical translator and a layout designer receive from the manager of our company drawings in their original form. In order to help the interpreter, our company can still provide a convenient translation format for the document. That is, if the drawings are in DWG format, then in addition we send the translated documents in PDF or Word format to the translator to facilitate and speed up the translation process.

When the translator starts working on the translation, he translates the pages at first with the drawings, making the translation into two columns. The left column contains the original language, the right one contains the translation. Thus, the translation is carried out sequentially by blocks in the direction “from left to right”. Then the translator sends a translation to the project manager, who sends it to the editor, where he is checked and deducted by the specialists, and only after that the translation is given to the layout designer. So in a parallel manner the work are doing At the end of the translation and layout we give the text to the technical editor for the final reconciliation.

Such a translation of the technical direction, such as the translation of the drawings of the construction of roads, structures, house plans, etc., is made in drawing tables and only in drawing type.

Layout of technical translation tables

In addition to graphs, diagrams, drawings, technical translations also contain tables in which units of measurement, symbols and decoding of signs are specified. In a variety of such documents, these tables are inserted as Jpeg images, and they are not calculated by the program when counting characters.

Therefore, the managers of our company carefully study the entire document when calculating the work execution time and cost. And, if these tables make up more than 20% of the entire document, the layout of such tables is considered additionally and respectively given to the professional layout designer. These moments we always agree with the client before starting work on the text.

We offer two options at least for solving this problem. The first: we give the layout to the layout designer of these tables, and the second one: we offer standard formatting, creating tables that are as close to the original as possible. The first option will not affect to the timing of the order, since it will be executed in parallel with the translation process by another specialist, but will require additional payment. The second option will not affect to the cost, but the execution time will increase, taking into account the additional complexity for the translator in formatting and creating tables.

We involve our best professionals for the layout of documents in this field, who will perform the layout of the tables in technical documents, as soon as possible.

We also offer our clients to work together, that is, to consult in the course of working with a specialist of the company who knows the terminology and knows all the subtleties that must be taken into account when translating. This helps to achieve the best result in technical translation.
