Use of technology when translating a site
It is always a dangerous business, trying to predict the future, especially because of unstable human behavior and rapid technological progress. Looking back on the language industry, one can come to the conclusion that there were no dramatic events. And yet, there are usually a number of problems associated with the translation of the site. Thanks to the constant development of technology, translators can make their work easier using modern technologies, when you need to translate the site.
Recently, one of the assistive technologies for translators, namely the “translation memory” more or less dominated the priority list of technologies for the growing number of players in this market. Less likely, because of its usefulness as a normal translation tool, most likely because it allows you to speed up the process of fulfilling an order. Customers and translation agencies now often insist on using this technology when translating sites.
Frankly speaking, the growing interest in modern translation memory technology is surprising given its awkwardness. The basic principle of translation memory is to allow the processing of previous translations and replacements between two sets of source and target texts. This principle works well with certain types of tasks, such as translating sites that are associated with a relatively small change, and where the previous version was fixed in the system’s memory. This is what was originally intended for translation memory systems.
However, when someone tries to fit this technology into everyday general work on conversion, the advantage of such technology becomes doubtful. This is due to the fact that most completed translations are not minor updates to previous translations of the same text. Some language service providers are trying to apply translation memory systems to large-scale technical documentation, where a certain terminology is repeated. Someone wonders if this technology will provide the savings that the client is looking for?
Although the concept of recycling previous remittances can be immediately attractive, today’s translation memory systems are not meant to be a general useful tool for professionals in general. Technology will not receive the same ubiquitous status as text processing, if it is not worked out.
To assess the benefits of technology, it can be useful to compare it to systems based on the example of machine translation. Machine translation creates translations based on a bilingual principle, rather than pure linguistic analysis. Thus, the machine translation system can create an excellent translation of the sentence, if a 100% analog is found. The difference between machine translation and translation memory is that the first is, first of all, the system of automatic retelling, and the internal principle of its work is not prepared for the input text. For comparison, the translation memory is not an automatic conversion system and assumes that the input text is associated with the memory content (for example, an earlier version of the site translation). However, the problem of using this technology for website translation is that it can only attract what is in its internal memory, it is unable to access a wider set of bilingual texts that can be accessed elsewhere.
Learning a foreign language concerns the language industry in the most fundamental way, because the sector relies on human resources for its ability to process input and output languages. So, for example, if an impressive methodology or technological tool is developed to make the learning process of a natural language more efficient and quick, the industry will benefit in the most obvious way. Being involved in training and technology and language, and also having practice, a competent interpreter knows that the skills in using technology alone do not make it more professional, although such skills are becoming more and more important.
The development of information technology dictates the demand for translation of sites. You can consider strengthening the perception of English as the center of the linguistic universe, as well as the progressing globalization based on the English language. Translation of the site is an integral part of the successful promotion of the company in the international market, and the use of modern technologies allows it to be performed more accurately and on time. If the translation of the site is made with the admission of errors, it can affect the overall image of the company and bring losses, modern technology allows to minimize such cases.
