Literary translation is a genre of literary creativity, where a book-writing, written in one language, is recreated in another. As literature is built of words, it is the only art that is a subject to linguistic barriers. Contrary to music, pictorial art, sculpture and dancing, book-writing is available only for those people, who know the language, on which the book is written. Certain peculiarities of literary translation are defined by its place among other types of translation and its relation to the original book-writing creativity.

In communicative retelling a language has more than communicative or social and connective purpose. Word acts as a “base element” of literature, which means that it has esthetic function. Between the beginning and the end of creative work a difficult process takes place, which is called “trans-expression” (named by A. S. Pushkin) of life, captured in styles of images of translated work. That is why problems of literary translation in the field of art are regulated by its certain laws.

Literary retelling is different from the literary creativity, where its existence depends on the existence of the object of translation. Although in an actual literary process it is not always easy to draw a line of difference between translation and creative literature on the whole. In many cases work may not be solely a translation, in its usual meaning, but more a special kind of creativity.

Translation is a historical term. Its meaning differs from one age to another, and each of them have various understanding of relations between translation and literature of the country. In each country a history of a literary translation is an organic part of a literature history. Usually, even the earliest written texts speak of the existence of a retelling. Periods, in which national kinds of literature are established, are also characterized by a fast growth of the amount of translations that are viewed as of being at the same level as creative literature texts. As national literature gathers, periods are viewed more and more as creations of writers that belong to other nations.

Views on a literary translation from the ancient times till countries show a conflict arises between to demands: to remain close to the original text and to approximate a readers` comprehension. In various historical periods extreme aspects of either of these demands are present. For example, in the middle age Europe, when Bible and other religious books composed most of works interpreted in new language, literary translation prevailed. During the XVIII century a tendency of adjusting to neoclassical peculiarities of norms of French literature of that period was most common. Later interest to unique quality of national art was accompanied by a tendency that underlined maximal closing-in to the original. It was a reaction against equation and adaptation. Distribution of multifaceted, all sided practice in translation and development of linguistics gradually lead to theoretical understanding of the fact that an age-old conflict between adhering to the text and warring for a reader is baseless and that true understanding of literary retelling is on the cross-road of these two demands. Translations should not completely serve as a substitution for the original text, but rather it should replace it completely. Defining factors in modern views of the literary translation is demand for the most delicate approach possible to the object of translation and demand for its recreation as an art object with unity of context and form and with all its national and separate qualities.
